2023 New Crop Quality Evaluation – Final Report (PDF)

The CMBTC’s Western Canadian Field Trials initiative works with the provincial Regional Variety Trials (RVTs) to grow and source samples of new and established malting barley varieties.  For the 2023 crop year, 6 newly registered varieties along with 3 controls were grown across 24 locations in western Canada.  Samples were tested for raw barley quality, micro-malted and analyzed for malting performance and quality. These trials serve as the CMBTC’s fourth year of evaluating new varieties as part of the CMBTC Western Canadian Field Trials (WCFTs). The purpose of the WCFTs is to generate comparative evaluation data to understand the characteristics each of variety leading to market acceptance and commercialization post-registration.

Quality of Western Canadian Malting Barley

The Grain Research Laboratory and the CMBTC collaborate on the annual publication of the Quality of Western Canadian Malting Barley. This report is based on micro scale samples and malting data to provide an overview of the quality of the new crop each year by variety. The report also provides data on provincial seeded area and production.
